Star lanterns are the symbol of the Mid-Autumn festival in Vietnam, but in reality, the color papers used to make them are still unaffordable in some poor rural areas. In needy circumstances, Vietnamese people, with their flexibility, created the Can Lantern.
The materials needed to make this Can Lantern can all be found around the house. From a used condensed milk can, old bicycle spokes, and a small bamboo strip, the unique Can Lantern was born. It is not only easy to make, but is also very interesting to use: when its wheels are rolled on the ground, it will emit fancy lights and funny sounds.
Most Vietnamese people who grew up in the rural areas or poor neighborhoods of the cities know this lantern and consider it a beautiful childhood memory whenever they think about the Mid-Autumn festival.
REFORMN wish to convey this culture to the public from the design perspective. We introduce the Can Lantern in the form of creative packages, so everyone, being familiar with this type of lantern or not, can all enjoy them in a surprising and interesting way. The Can Lantern is combined with the moon cake in a whole colorful packaging design with high-end printing and finishing techniques. Consumers, after eating the moon cake in the can, are able to follow the instructions to create the Can Lantern by themselves with the materials provided.
